The Surface Mini was expected to be launched on May 20 in New York, but due to some last-minute changes, the company only introduced the new Surface Pro 3 tablet that goes on sale today.

Although some people close to the matter said that plans for a Surface Mini had been shelved, it appears that the device still exists and might see the light of day sometime in the future.

Neowin came across a reference to the Surface Mini in a OneNote document, which is probably the most obvious sign that the smaller Surface was, and most likely will be, an important project for the company.

Not much is known about this tablet, but people close to the matter said that the Surface Mini could come with an 8-inch screen that would make it perfect for taking notes and drawing. Word is that Microsoft planned to sell it as a note-taking device, so a digital pen would have also been offered as part of the package.

Of course, the company hasn't talked at all about the Surface Mini, but some sources said that the new CEO Satya Nadella and Stephen Elop, former Nokia boss and now in charge of the devices unit at Microsoft, were the ones who decided to pull the plug on the tablet because it was too similar to smaller tablets on the market.
