In line with the various enhancements it announced for Windows Azure and SQL Azure, Microsoft made available for download a new application aimed at offering new ways for keeping data organized.

We’re referring here to the SQL Azure Labs Codename "Data Explorer" Client, which was made available for download as a labs release, with various management capabilities inside.

The new Microsoft codename "Data Explorer" is meant to deliver means of keeping data organized, while also offering the possibility to manage, mash up and gain insights from the said data.

Available for download in a 6.5 MB package, the application is available for machines that run under Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

The main features that the new software comes with include:

- Identify the data you care about from the sources you work with (e.g. Excel spreadsheets, files, SQL Server databases). - Discover relevant data and services via automatic recommendations from the Windows Azure Marketplace. - Enrich your data by combining it and visualizing the results.

The new software was designed to work with Office 2010 SP1 or Office 2007 suites, while also requiring .NET 3.5 SP1 to be installed for proper functionality.

“The Data Explorer Client package contains the Data Explorer workspace as well as an Office plugin that integrates Data Explorer into Excel,” Microsoft explains.

Microsoft Codename "Data Explorer" was made available for download both in 32-bit and 64-bit distributions. Users should consider downloading the appropriate version that fits the Office suite iteration they have installed on their Windows PCs.

On its download website, Microsoft suggests that users should register for this download, so that they will be provided with the latest resources that are relevant to their interests (such as service packs, security notices, and training). The registration process should take only several moments.
