All features will actually be part of Windows 10

After Windows Phone 8.1 Update, Microsoft was expected to launch a second update intuitively called Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, but according to a new report, this project has been canceled and all efforts are now focused on the next full version of the mobile operating system.

NPU writes that Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, also known as GDR2, is no longer part of Microsoft’s plans, and all the features that were initially projected to be included in this release will actually see daylight together with Windows Phone 10.

Interestingly, the same report adds that GDR2 is already ready at this point and could be shipped to users at any time, but since Windows 10 Mobile is so close to getting released, at least in preview form, Microsoft obviously wants to keep interest in its new platform alive and tries to bring all new features on the market at once.

Windows 10 Mobile preview coming soon

People close to the matter indicated that the next version of Windows Phone could be called Windows 10 Mobile, which kind of makes sense, given the fact that such a designation would allow Microsoft to better capitalize on the popularity of Windows and thus bring more people on its smartphone platform.

The very first preview of Windows 10 Mobile is very likely to be presented at the January 21 event that will be taking place in Redmond, when Microsoft will also discuss plans for consumers in the new operating system.

The company is very likely to adopt a similar strategy as on the desktop and release a technical preview version of Windows 10 Mobile that would run on all devices and would be freely available for all users.

The same is happening on the desktop too, where users can download the technical preview if they register for the Windows Insider program and have their computers automatically updated with new features when they become available.
