Microsoft has already announced in December that Research and Strategy Chief Craig Mundie would retire, but the company refused to reveal the name of his successor.

Although Microsoft is yet to make this public, it appears that Eric Rudder has already been named the Head of Microsoft Research, Trustworthy Computing and of the Technology Policy Group, after previously working as Chief Technical Officer.

Even though his new appointment may not be such big news for some of you, Rudder is actually one of the Microsoft executives that has been considered a potential company CEO, as Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet.com points out.

Rudder was placed alongside Steven Sinofsky (former Windows boss and no longer a Microsoftie) and Tami Reller (currently in charge with the Windows division) in the group that could manage the Redmond-based technology giant at some point.

Sadly for Rudder, he diminished his chances to become CEO when he started working on less known projects such as the Midori operating system.
