As part of its effort to revamp the app lineup and become a much more important name on other mobile platforms, Microsoft has recently purchased Sunrise, the company behind what’s currently one of the top calendar apps on iOS and Android.

This is the second time in just a few weeks when Microsoft is looking at companies offering top solutions on rival platforms, as the Redmond-based tech giant has recently purchased Accompli to bring a new Outlook email client on iOS and Android.

While there are no details as to how exactly Microsoft could integrate Sunrise into its very own app lineup, there’s no doubt that the company is willing to offer its users a better calendar solution that would most likely be available across all platforms, including Windows Phone, Android, and iOS.

It could be directly integrated into Outlook

The existing calendar apps available on Microsoft’s apps are decent to say the least, but Microsoft might be using Sunrise to improve these solutions and thus get a fair advantage in the app race against iOS and Android.

Microsoft, which hasn’t confirmed the deal until now, is still suffering from the lack of apps on its modern platforms, and very often the low market share of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 is said to be caused by this factor.

With Sunrise, Microsoft could integrate a new calendar app directly into Outlook and thus offer a solution that would really appeal to businesses and users who want to keep things organized in their lives.

Together with Cortana, Outlook and the new calendar app would perfectly target individuals and organizations trying to keep track of their appointments and schedule, and would offer a solution that includes some of the best features on the market right now.

What’s more, Microsoft would also manage to appeal to users on iOS and Android, but it’s not yet clear if it’s trying to offer those on Windows some kind of advantage or exclusive feature in any way.
