Redmond launches “new tab” extension for Chrome

Microsoft is really serious about making Bing a more powerful rival for Google Search, so the company is trying all kinds of strategies to convince more users to give its own service a try.

This time, Microsoft is going in Google's yard to bring more people on Bing, so it launched a new extension for Google Chrome browser that's supposed to put the beauty of its search engine in the spotlight.

The “new tab” extension that Microsoft launched today does nothing more than to automatically load Bing whenever Google Chrome users create a new tab, so it's more like a home page for new tabs.

Obviously, some people might believe that this is pretty much a waste of time because nobody wants to have a search engine load automatically when they open a new tab, but Microsoft is trying to achieve something different this time.

The new extension indeed gets users to Bing, but at the same time, it also shows them the Bing homepage of the day, which is an HD wallpaper that in most of the cases looks stunning. These wallpapers can be downloaded and used as backgrounds on PCs, phones, and tablets, so Microsoft turned them into a key feature for attracting more users on Bing.

Plenty of bugs

Leaving the lack of features aside, the new extension could actually appeal to a user or two. But only if it worked. In fact, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and it's all due to a weird bug that causes the new tab to show a window full of what seem to be CSS codes.

This looks like a widespread issue because plenty of users actually reported it and we're getting the same error on the latest version of Chrome and Windows 10.

Microsoft is most likely aware of this issue and working to address it, so look forward to an update anytime in the next few days.
