Microsoft has finally made animated Start screen backgrounds available to users, but they won’t be publicly accessible until the RTM version of Windows 8.1 hits the market.

The leaked build 9471 brings lots of changes, including these animated wallpapers that can be configured from the Start screen personalization menu available via the “Settings” charm in Windows 8.1.

At this point, there are several backgrounds pre-installed in the OS, but there’s no dedicated option to add new ones for the time being.

Animated wallpapers move as you scroll on the Start screen, so it also depends on the number of live tiles you configured to be displayed in Metro.

Windows 8.1 RTM is set to be compiled this month, while general availability is very likely to be announced by October, with sales to begin shortly after that.
