Third-party Start button apps have enjoyed a terrific success after the launch of Windows 8, but it seems like Microsoft isn’t quite pleased with this thing.

The developers behind 8StartButton, one of the apps that bring a Start button on Windows 8, have been contacted by the tech giant to remove some icons using the program and the Windows logo that played the role of a Start button.

“Microsoft contacted us and asked to remove multiple icons from the included icons library that were too similar or almost identical to Microsoft application icons, like the icon for Internet Explorer and a few others. Although used by other software vendors, too, we have also removed the start button Windows logo images and created our own ones,” developers explained in the release notes of their new app.

It’s not yet clear if Microsoft plans to do the same thing with some other third-party Start button apps, but word is that the company itself wants to bring back the Start orb in the next Windows release.
