With Verizon announcing its "Any Apps, Any Device" option for customers starting from 2008, Microsoft was quick to applaud the move. The praises came from Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business, informing of the Redmond company's full support of the Verizon Wireless open development initiative. Microsoft's position is that Verizon opening up its wireless network will end up only benefiting the end users. By the end of 2008, all customers in the U.S. will be able to connect and use Verizon's wireless network to third party devices, software and applications.

"Microsoft is very excited to see Verizon Wireless make such a bold move to satisfy the demands of wireless consumers. As people's mobile needs to become more sophisticated and varied, they require smarter and more adaptable mobile devices. We are proud to support any open access that puts more power in people's hands to connect them to the information they want when and where they want it," revealed Pieter Knook, Microsoft Senior Vice President of the Mobile Communications Business.

"This is a transformation point in the 20-year history of mass market wireless devices -- one which we believe will set the table for the next level of innovation and growth," said Lowell McAdam, Verizon Wireless president and chief executive officer. "Verizon Wireless is not changing our successful retail model, but rather adding an additional retail option for customers looking for a different wireless experience."

From Microsoft's point of view, the move can only be beneficial for its Windows Mobile business. The Redmond company has slowly, but surely, been making headway on the market for operating systems and software for mobile phones. In fact, at this point in time, Windows Mobile is the fastest growing platform for mobile phones, being already available in no less than 140 models from over 48 manufacturers worldwide. On top of this, Microsoft informed that the operating system comes with support for in excess of 18,000 applications.
