Microsoft explains that it all happened due to a “technical error”

Microsoft is officially investigated for failing to offer European users a web browser choice screen, but the Redmond-based technology company says it all happened due to a technical error.

This error may in the end cost Microsoft up to 10 percent of its annual turnover in case the European Commission decides to fine the company.

“We take this matter very seriously and moved quickly to address this problem as soon as we became aware of it,” Microsoft said in a statement.

“Although this was the result of a technical error, we take responsibility for what happened, and we have taken steps to strengthen our internal procedures to help ensure something like this cannot happen again. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and will continue to cooperate fully with the Commission.”

It remains to be seen however if the European Commission will indeed issue a fine or Microsoft will get away with a warning. A decision is expected before Christmas, as antitrust regulators previously pointed out.
