Microsoft is already testing Windows 10 for Phones but hasn't yet committed to a release date. While there are people who own compatible Technical Preview smartphones, Microsoft is working hard to add new features and improvements that are tested in these builds.

Now, for the first time after the official announcement of Windows 10 for Phones, Microsoft's Terry Myerson committed to a launch window for the company's new operating system.

According to him, Windows 10 will be available this summer in 190 countries and 111 languages. Along with the PC version, Microsoft will release the mobile version of its operating system, Windows 10 for Phones.

One of Microsoft's major partners, Lenovo confirmed it would launch Windows 10 for Phones handsets in mid-year 2015, which will be available through major carrier China Mobile.

Also, the Redmond-based company announced a new program with Xiaomi, one of the major smartphone makers in the world, which will provide select Xiaomi Mi4 power users to test Windows 10 and offer their feedback.

Myerson also highlighted the fact that Microsoft has introduced the Qualcomm DragonBoard 410C, the first Windows 10 dev board with integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, as well as a smartphone-class Snapdragon 410 chipset.

An August release means flagship smartphones could come in September

While no specific date has been given for the release of Windows 10 for Phone, we assume that Microsoft will want to have the PC and mobile versions launched around the same timeframe.

However, if Windows 10 gets released in August, we might see the first flagship smartphones hit shelves sometime in September / October.

“Windows 10 is the only platform that supports innovation across such a broad family of hardware and we are committed to investing in the success of our partners and supporting their development activities.

“I can’t wait to see how amazing companies around the world will continue to innovate with devices running Windows 10. Working together I know we can create some incredible experiences with Windows 10 that will truly delight our customers,” concluded Myerson.
