Support engineers recommend users to let the device cool down for a minute

Microsoft has confirmed that the Surface 2 indeed has some overheating problems and promised a fix that could be released in the coming weeks.

Many users who turned to Microsoft’s Community forums said that the Surface 2 was overheating when playing specific games and, in some cases, the screen dims for no clear reason.

While many have confirmed that it’s only happening when playing games with an Xbox controller connected with the USB port, others are suggesting that the device is automatically dimming the screen because it no longer detects any touch input, so the tablet enters power saving.

Microsoft has already confirmed the issue and said that a fix is in the works right now. In the meantime, users are strongly recommended to leave the tablets to cool down a little bit.

“Surface devices may dim the screen as thermal temperatures rise from extended, high CPU intensive activities-- like gaming. In some scenarios this does not appear necessary. Our top priority is for customers to have the best possible experience on their Surface device. We’re working on a tuning update that will remove this unnecessary dimming event. You can expect this update in an upcoming Windows Update package,” a Microsoft support engineer said.

“In the meantime allow the Surface to cool down for a minute or so in order to return the screen to previous brightness levels.”

Microsoft hasn’t mentioned whether it plans to wait for December 2013 Patch Tuesday rollout to fix the issue or bring an update a bit sooner, but keep an eye on Windows Update to get it as soon as it’s released.

Just like all the other patches, it’ll be delivered via Windows Update, which means that no user interaction will be required, assuming that your tablet is connected to the Internet to automatically download the necessary package.
