Microsoft has published an interesting report focusing on the number of malicious websites hosted in the European Union compared to the worldwide average.

As far as malware is concerned, on a global scale, Brazil, Venezuela and China have the largest number of servers hosting malware.

In the EU, the most malware distribution sites are located in Luxembourg, Romania, Cyprus, Latvia and Lithuania. All of these countries host more malware distribution websites than the worldwide average.

Most drive-by download URLs have been identified in Azerbaijan, Syria and Uzbekistan. In the EU, Cyprus has the largest number of drive-by download sites – almost six times the global average.

Other countries where numerous drive-by download sites are hosted are Latvia, Hungary, Germany and Luxembourg.

Cyprus also tops the chart when it comes to phishing websites, followed by Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, the UK, Denmark and Luxembourg.

It’s worth noting that the results are based on data from Microsoft’s Security Intelligence Report volume 14. The statistics focus on the fourth quarter of 2012.
