Redmond is now planning a strategic investment in Foursquare Labs

Microsoft and American Express are only two of the companies reportedly involved in talks with Foursquare Labs over a possible strategic investment and sources close to the matter reveal that talks with the Redmond-based giant have already reached an advanced stage.

Bloomberg is reporting that the two companies are rather competing to invest in Foursquare, so the probability of a joint bid is very low. At the same time, the report states that discussions could end up with no deal between the involved parties.

While Redmond has refused to comment on the matter, it’s pretty clear that Foursquare would be quite a great addition to Microsoft’s portfolio of services, as it would support the company’s efforts in the social market.

Bing and other similar services would clearly benefit from the deal, as Foursquare offers users the possibility to “check in” whenever they visit specific points of interest, such as restaurants and bars.

Foursquare has recently released its own Metro app specifically optimized for Windows 8, following a deal with Microsoft announced in June at the BUILD developer conference.
