Microsoft has announced the evolution of its enterprise data aggregation platform aimed at healthcare organizations. Microsoft Amalga Unified Intelligence System (UIS) 2009 was introduced at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2009 Annual Conference & Exhibition, with the Redmond company emphasizing a range of enhancements designed to take the system one step further in allowing professionals and patients alike improved access to healthcare information. In this regard, Amalga UIS 2009 is set up to centralize data stored in disparate systems and make it available to both doctors and patients.

“Hospitals and healthcare organizations can promote better real-time decision-making, and ultimately better health outcomes, by liberating the wealth of patient data stored in siloed systems and putting it in the hands of key stakeholders,” revealed Steve Shihadeh, vice president, Microsoft Health Solutions Group.

By streamlining access to information, Amalga UIS 2009 is focused on increasing productivity but also reducing the total cost of ownership compared to existing systems set in place. The Redmond company indicated that boosted efficiency and cut-down TCO could come as a result of the features delivered by the solution, from being able to connect to HealthVault, to Amalga Web functionality, but also preconfigured add-on modules and additional IT tools.

“When used together, Amalga UIS 2009 and HealthVault, at the direction of the patient, bring this existing information to patients, doctors, family members and caregivers, which helps keep them informed while improving their effectiveness and productivity, as well as their overall experience with the care process,” Shihadeh added.

Amalga UIS 2009 is capable of stretching into the Cloud and connecting with HealthVault, and downloading all the patient's clinical data from the HealthVault record. But at the same time, through the ASTM Continuity of Care Record (CCR) industry-standard specification, Amalga UIS 2009 can also update HealthVault patient records. In addition, the next generation of the system can be accessed remotely via the Internet with support available for the following browsers: Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. Concomitantly with Amalga UIS 2009, Microsoft is also introducing new modules: the Amalga UIS Quality Measures module, the Amalga UIS Research Foundation module, and the Amalga UIS Medical Imaging module.
