Microsoft's Satya Nadella shows why the world needs Windows

Microsoft's Windows 10 event on Wednesday had a little bit of something for each and every one of us, no matter if we're looking into ways to be productive, play games on our PCs, get in touch with friends, or imagine the future with holograms.

But at the end of the conference, Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella took the stage to wrap up all the announcements and to detail not only the new approach of the company for its new operating system but also to show how personal Windows can become at certain times, turning into one irreplaceable piece of software.

There's no doubt that Windows is indeed getting more personal, and the addition of personal assistant Cortana is the living proof. Cortana can track your interests, searches, and places you visit, can make you recommendations, can set up reminders, and can basically become your very own personal assistant.

The most personal OS ever

But Windows is more than that, Nadella said, unveiling three of his recent experiences that prove how important the operating system can become for the whole world.

“This summer, I was in an ICU room with my son as he was recovering from a surgery, and I saw all of these Windows Embedded devices and Windows PCs and tablets being used by the nursing staff and the doctors to take care of them. There cannot be anything more personal than that,” Nadella said.

And this isn't all.

The passion that drives Microsoft's employees forward to build new products, be they tablets, PCs, software, or phones, can also be seen in the way customers from all over the world interact with all of these.

“Over the holidays I had a chance to see an 11-year old girl unbox a Lumia 535, which was their very first computing device for the family, and get herself set up on Microsoft Account and all of these services and download Candy Crush and Skype and teach her parents about what it means to use those things. And that experience, the delight in that little girl’s eyes left an undeniable impression on me,” he continued.

A little bonus for current users

Microsoft has made it clear that Windows has managed to change the world and it's very clear that Windows 10 needs to succeed in order to help everyone in almost every single industry out there.

And to make sure that this goal is reached, the company has gone so far that it's ready to offer Windows 10 free of charge as an upgrade to those on Windows 7 and Windows 8.

This is quite a first for Microsoft, but the reason behind this decision is as clear as it could be: the company wants to bring as many users as possible on Windows 10, and offering it for free is clearly the fastest and easiest way to do that.

Bill Gates' dream to bring Windows on every desk is reality now. But Satya Nadella's new mission is to make people love Windows. By the looks of things, Microsoft's third CEO in history has all the chances in the world to do that from the very first shot.
