Here is some news that confirms all the rumors surrounding the next version of Windows Phone’s codename. It appears that Microsoft has unofficially confirmed that the next major mobile platform after 8.1 will be called Threshold.

Currently, there are many people at Microsoft that are working on Windows Phone Threshold and some of the company’s employees with LinkedIn accounts included the information in their CVs. For example one of Microsoft’s employee has the following mentioned in the CV:

"- Designed and shipped Reading View for Windows Phone 8.1; - Designing and planning new features for vNext on IE 11+ for Windows and Windows Phone Threshold."

The same goes for the next version of Windows, which apparently will be called Windows Threshold as well. Microsoft is expected to launch a major version of the Windows operating system, which will be released on desktop, tablets and smartphones.

Threshold seems to be the common name for the platform, though it will be different on desktop and mobile devices. Microsoft has been planning to converge all its services for quite some time and with Threshold the company is one step closer to achieving that.

All major players in the market aspire to this notion of convergence, including Google and Canonical, but none has managed to achieve it yet. However, all three companies are actively preparing for the moment when there will be one operating system powering most of the gadgets we’re using today.

Microsoft’s Threshold is likely to unify lots of the services offered by the company on Windows Phone devices and desktop, but it’s also expected to allow users to continue their activities from where they left off regardless of the device they are using, be it mobile or desktop.

But that is not all. With Threshold, Microsoft plans to bring the Windows Phone, Windows 8 and Xbox stores into a single entity. The development toolset for these platforms are expected to be unified as well, thus making it easier for devs to create apps and games for either of the platforms.

Windows Phone Threshold is expected to be officially unveiled next year, but it’s too early to talk about an exact release date. We suspect Microsoft would want to make an announcement in early 2015, perhaps at CES or MWC trade fairs.

However, it’s very much possible that Threshold will be introduced at the BUILD 2015 developer conference in April and Microsoft could also make it available as a preview.
