Phil Harrison, the senior vice president of Microsoft's Xbox division, says that the eight year life cycle of the Xbox 360 enabled the company to develop the right tech to launch the new Xbox One.

He tells MCV that, "Xbox 360 continues to grow, over 80m units and counting. And the underlying silicon chip design innovations that allow Xbox One to be what it is, didn’t reach the performance level and price point that we needed until right now."

The console was off to a rocky start but has managed to be a success during the last few years, when it routinely topped sales in the crucial United States market.

The Xbox One has managed to sell 1 million units in 24 hours since its November 22 launch date.

Microsoft says that it currently has plans to support the 360 device for at least another couple of years.
