PCI Express virtualization technology becomes part of Micron's technology portfolio

In a move that is quite common on the worldwide IT industry, and every other industry really, Micron has announced that it is taking over ownership of Virtensys.

Micron already has an extensive collection of solid state drive storage units, but its enterprise collection could do with some enhancements.

It has been looking for a means to add better virtualization support to its product collections, so buying Virtensys makes a fair amount of sense.

After all, the company is known for developing just the sort of PCIe virtualization technology that Micron needs.

“Virtensys has served as an OEM focused company working to deliver innovative solutions with some of the world‘s leading server, storage and I/O adapter manufacturers,” said John Nicholson, Virtensys chairman and CEO.

“Our technology complements Micron’s enterprise products as we strive to empower the virtual data center, and we are delighted to join the Micron family.”

Virtensys is based in Manchester, England and Beaverton, Oregon.

The transaction should close by the end of the month (January, 2012), but the financial details are confidential.

“Virtensys‘ PCIe-sharing technology has helped change the way data center operators manage and deploy their virtualized I/O resources, and Micron’s enterprise PCIe drive delivers market-leading speed, reliability and power efficiency,” said Edward Doller, Micron vice president and chief memory systems architect.

“This agreement would enable a combination of enterprise technology solutions that have the opportunity to virtualize SSD storage on the path to a more flexible and dynamic data center.”

For those who want an update on what Micron does for a living, the corporation manufactures multiple sorts of memory, such as NOR, NAND Flash and DRAM.

It is also responsible for the existence of various memory technologies, packaging solutions and semiconductor systems.

Once this latest acquisition closes, it will be only a matter of time before new and improved enterprise SSDs get launched.
