Indian company Micromax has confirmed plans to expand its operations in Europe. One of the most important OEMs in India, Micromax is set to release new smartphones in Russia and Romania by the end of the year.

The information has been recently confirmed by Rahul Sharma, co-founder, Micromax Informatics Ltd, who stated the following in an interview for The Hindu Business Line:

“Our end goal is to go global as an Indian hardware brand. I do not want to be seen as an Indian company anymore. We have tested waters in markets such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and we are among the top three phone brands in both the markets.”

Sharma also said that the expansion plan was already in motion, as Micromax had already set up offices in Russia with the help of employees coming from the competition.

Given the fact that Google does not operate in Russia at a large level, Micromax has teamed up with Yandex to offer customers the latest Android apps and services:

“We are launching in Russia in December and if I am able to crack Russia, we will also able to capture the whole (of) Europe. We have a couple of products especially for that market, and Google doesn’t work there so we have tied up with Yandex on the application level,” added Sharma.

In the same piece of news, Micromax’s official said that the Indian OEM would soon purchase a software company, but was rather vague on the name and timing of this unexpected move.

Micromax has started to invest heavily in marketing, as the company has just launched its new flagship smartphone in India, the Canvas Turbo A250.

The Indian OEM has managed to appoint Hugh Jackman as its brand ambassador, which seems to be a smart move if they wish to expand operations in other countries as well. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
