The second largest smartphone maker in India, Micromax has just announced the upcoming availability of the world’s first phone with 21 languages, the Unite 2.

Micromax Unite 2 is also the cheapest smartphone launched by the Indian OEM, which ships with Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system out of the box. In addition, Micromax has confirmed that the Unite 2 will be upgradeable through FOTA (firmware over the air).

Obviously, Micromax Unite 2 will only be available in India, which is why in contains mostly the languages spoken in this country: English, Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Odia, Bengali, Assamese, Marathi, Nepali, Bodo, Dogri, Konkani, Kashmiri, Maithili, Manipuri, Sanskrit, and Sindhi.

According to the Indian OEM, Micromax Unite 2 will be available for purchase in grey, white, red and green, beginning May 22 for only Rs 6,999 ($120 / €87) outright.

As many of you have probably noticed, the Unite 2 will be available for the same price as the amazingly popular Motorola Moto E smartphone, which made its entrance into the Indian market last week.

However, Micromax Unite 2 comes with slightly better features than the Moto E. For example, the Indian smartphone is equipped with a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory, which can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card slot.

It also sports a larger 4.7-inch Bright Graph IPS capacitive touchscreen display that supports 480 x 800 pixels resolution. As expected, the smartphone offers dual-SIM capability with dual standby support and also packs a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus, LED flash and video recording.

Micromax Unite 2 also sports a secondary 2-megapixel camera in the front for video calls and comes packed with a 2000 mAh battery inside.

It features some pre-loaded games such as Burn the Rope, Toystory Smash it, Marble, as well as some apps and services, including MAd, Getit, Games Club, Hike, M!Games, Kingsoft Office, M!Live, Opera Mini, Reverie Phonebook and Reverie Smartpad.

Here is what Mr. Shubhodip Pal, CMO, Micromax, had to say about the launch of the United 2 smartphone, “India is a diverse country and language at times can act as a barrier for people to seamlessly communicate on their phones.

Therefore, we firmly believe that support for local languages on phones will perhaps be the next big driver for day to day phone transactions, internet usage and online content consumption in India given that most of the population does not use English as their primary language.”
