It's no news that Indian OEM Micromax plans to launch its first Windows Phone handsets this summer, but we did not expect it to happen so soon.

Micromax is rumored to announce its first two Windows Phone smartphones for India no later than Monday, June 16. The information is confirmed by Times of India, though until Micromax doesn't come forward with an official announcement, we can't be sure it will happen so soon.

Although the Indian company may announce the smartphones on June 16, there's no telling when exactly they will go on sale, which means Windows Phone fans might have to wait a few more weeks or maybe less to be able to grab any of the two rumored handsets.

According to the cited source, Micromax did not wish to reveal the price tag for either of the two smartphones, but from sources close to the matter we have learned that they will not cost more than Rs 10,000 outright, which is about $165 or €125.

This means that both smartphones will target the entry-level segment of the market. However, no matter the aim of these Windows Phone handsets, they will sure be popular among Indian customers given the lack of smartphones powered by Microsoft's latest mobile platform.

The only Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone now available for purchase in India is the Nokia Lumia 630, which has been priced at Rs 10,500 ($175 / €130) for the single-SIM version and Rs 11,500 ($190 / €140) for the dual-SIM model.

This means that Micromax has a major opportunity here to boost its smartphone sales even more, but that will also depend on the hardware configuration of these devices.

We doubt they will be much lower in specs than the Lumia 630, but we can't really speculate on how good Micromax' smartphones will be compared to Microsoft's.

As mentioned earlier, Micromax plans to launch two Windows Phone 8.1 on June 16, which will be the first smartphone to ship with Microsoft's latest version of Windows Phone out of the box.

The better featured of the two is supposed to cost around Rs 10,000 ($165 / €125) outright, while the more affordable should go on sale for around Rs 7,000 ($115 / €85).

Keep in mind that these are just estimates based on the latest hearsay, so we recommend our readers to take it with a grain of salt until Micromax makes an official announcement. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
