India is the land of cheap Android smartphones and tablets. Opposite to what one may think, it’s not the big brands that are brings the prices low, but the regional manufacturers who are trying to compete with them.

Since Google announced its latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform, many Indian companies have been tempted to launch new devices based on this new operating system.

However, it took India a few months until local manufacturers tried their hands on ICS-based devices. In the past few weeks, quite a high number of Android 4.0 smartphones and tablets have been announced in India.

We reported yesterday on HCL’s new ICS-based tablets, which are about to make their entrance on the market for exceptionally low prices.

Today, another Indian manufacturer announces the upcoming availability of an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, Micromax. The company’s new “Funbook” tablet is aimed at those who cannot afford a more expensive tablet like Samsung or Motorola.

The folks over at AndroidOS claim that Micromax Funbook also targets students, as the tablet is shipped with e-learning app and content from Pearson, Scholarshub and other publishers.

Hardware-wise, the Funbook comes with a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports 800 x 480 pixels resolution.

The slate is equipped with a 1.2 GHz single core processor and packs 512 MB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

The tablet comes with HDMI out port, Wi-Fi support and a VGA front facing camera for self-portraits and video calls.

Moreover, it turns out that Micromax is also offering a Tata Photon data card bundled in the sales package. This data card can be attached via USB port for connectivity.

Micromax Funbook tablet is expected to hit shelves in the following weeks for a suggested retail price of Rs 6,499 (130 USD or 95 EUR).
