Scientists at the University of Washington and MIT believe that microbes should be added to the plethora of variables that are accounted for in climate models. Biology should be added to fields such as atmospherics, oceanography, seismology, geology, physics and chemistry.

Each computer model seeking to determine how Earth's climate will behave in the long run has thousands of variables, each of which tweak the end result by a significant margin. The biggest fear among scientists today is leaving something out.

A new report, called “Incorporating Microbial Processes into Climate Models,” was just released by the American Academy of Microbiology, reviewing why microorganisms are important for climate change. You can see the report here.

“Climate scientists and microbiologists usually work in isolation from each other, and yet their work is intimately connected. Microbes are critical players in every geochemical cycle relevant to climate,” the reports says, according to e! Science News.
