From Gap-mom to First Lady of Fashion

All eyes are now on Michelle Obama, the First Lady of Fashion, as the stylists are calling her. The Presidential Inauguration is not just about Barak, it is said, but also about Michelle, who now has to prove that, when it comes to style and elegance on the red carpet, no other woman in the US is a match for her – something she has had no problems with, so far.

For the Inauguration, Michelle opted for a specially made dress and winter coat from Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo, in precious golden tones, matched with Jimmy Choo Glacier pumps and gloves in the same shade. The combination of green and golden was a most fortunate one, stylists worldwide seem to agree, revealing that even on a windy day Michelle can be quite a “ray of sunshine.”

“I wanted to pick a very optimistic color, that had sunshine. I wanted her to feel charmed, and in that way she would charm everybody. This is so wonderful.” Isabel Toledo told the media from her New York studio, regarding Michelle choosing her creation for the big event. It was all the more pleasing to be picked by the First Lady, Toledo added, since they “don’t even have a PR person!”

Work on the outfit began before Christmas, Toledo also revealed, with countless people involved in the making of the stunning creation. Made of Swiss wool lace, tulle netting for warmth and lined in French silk, the dress and coat represent the effort of an entire team. “Chinese ladies, Polish ladies, Spanish ladies – I have a picture of everyone working on her clothes,” as Toledo herself explained.

The Tom Binns diamond necklace Michelle matched with the collarless dress was on loan, “keeping with the current gloomy economic mood,” as fashion columnist Liz Jones says. Then again, as an insider recently revealed to the media, Michelle Obama is not one to “care too much for fuss,” even if people can hardly tell.
