So far hailed as one of the most stylish presences in politics ever, First Lady Michelle Obama is now taking heavy fire from fashion critics and regular people alike for her choice of a gown for her first official White House photo. The simple Michael Kors creation highlights Michelle’s waist and puts her toned arms in plain view, in what has been deemed a too inappropriate display of skin, several media outlets are reporting.

Michelle Obama reportedly gets up at 5.30 in the morning to work out, and has the arms to prove it. As such, some say, she should be entitled to go sleeveless whenever she feels like it, especially since it has become crystal clear by now that she’s a fan of this type of dress. Be that as it may, critics are pinpointing about the newly-released photo, there is such a thing as “inappropriately sleeveless,” and the occasion and timing were both wrong for her choice.

For starters, angry readers are telling the Chicago Tribune, the black sleeveless dress Michelle Obama chose is both too informal and out of season. It’s winter now and this is, at the end of the day, her first photo at the White House as the First Lady, so perhaps she should have chosen to show less skin, detractors are vouching. Last but not least, she is the First Lady and showing that much skin – be it on her arms – is not appropriate. The “sleeveless scandal” has now completely taken over the US media, with the pro and con camps weighing a bitter dispute in the media, it is further being added.

Nevertheless, fans of Michelle Obama’s simple, yet always sophisticated, style can’t but help come to her defense. The New York Post says of the Joyce N. Boghosian portrait, and ultimately of Michelle’s choice for a gown, that it is “something reminiscent of what Jackie Kennedy Onassis would have donned when she was first lady.” “The sleeveless look is very much in keeping with what we’ve seen from Michelle Obama. It is very much her signature look, so I wasn’t that surprised.” Politico White House reporter Malika Henderson explains for ABC News.

In donning the sleek, black, sleeveless number highlighted with a string of white pearls, Michelle Obama officially became the first First Lady to pose for an official portrait with bare arms – whether critics like it or not.
