Ferrari must be very disappointed with Michael Schumacher's performance in the Hungarian GP. Even if he had the chance to get at least 8 points out of Fernando Alonso in the overall standings, the German failed to get to the finish line. Just 10 laps to go and Schumacher was trailing Alonso. A few moments later, he was out, after colliding with Nick Heidfeld. The BMW managed to finish the race, while Schumacher watched a great chance go by.
Being that Alonso never went out in the season until Hungary, Schumacher
may be considered to have had a golden opportunity in Hungaroring. It's highly unlikely that Alonso will abandon a race again in the 5 remaining GPs. And Michael Schumacher knows it very well.
"I am very disappointed. We had a great opportunity but we did not take it. All weekend, and especially the race, was something of a roller-coaster and in the end we found ourselves back where we started, although with one less race to go", admitted Schumacher after the race. The gap between him and Alonso remained the same. Eleven points separates the two with 5 races to go in the championship.
And Ferrari was pretty frustrated with the result too. The Italian team only managed to get one point out of this race, with Felipe Massa finishing 8th overall.
"It's true that when you look at what happened in the race, the outcome could have been much worse. But it is still hard to swallow. It was very frustrating in the first half. We weren't very fast when it was wet but the race was coming towards us. We had a chance to make up a lot of points and we didn't", said the Ferrari team boss, Ross Brown.
Renault are now just 7 points clear at the top of the table, with 149 points. Ferrari are second, with 142 points, while McLaren is trailing both teams, with 85 points.
