In most people's opinion, Michael Moore is both controversial and talented. Nowadays, everyone seems to either hate him or adore his works, or at least that was the case a few years ago. All in all, his political satires and painful truths seem to get a little old for the public, as is his constant hunt for convenient scape-goats.
His new documentary, "Sicko", about USA's health-care system, doesn't look so bright at the box-office so far, making only $12 million, when at least $9 million were invested in it. Most people also wonder when the documentary will get a worldwide release, although the subject is mostly of interest to the Americans. So far, those who have seen this new film gave it high marks, including critics, as the movie is doing well in online charts. So, if "Sicko" is so damn good, how come it's going so-and-so at the box office?
Seeing this situation, speculations have appeared that Mr. Moore is planning to switch to feature films and fiction, like romantic stuff and other soapy presentations. His last feature-length film wasn't so hot, 1995's "Canadian Bacon" being a total flop in both ticket sales and praises from critics. My problem is, why switch to romantic comedies when people have plenty of those, but not enough truths revealed or conspiracy theories researched? If only for the money, that would classify the guy as both hypocritical AND greedy, so his previous works would lose any shred of credibility they had. If not for the money, then alternate reason will be a mystery as deep as 9/11, unless he can find a decent explanation.
And the last issue that puzzles me is, if he was so critical of the Bush administration and a close friend to the Democrats, even supporting John Kerry in his 2004 campaign, what will happen to Moore if the Democrats win in 2008? Is that the reason why he's writing whiny scripts for future romantic movies? He has a tough choice between being the constantly unhappy dissident and the political propaganda tool of the same party he criticized during the Clinton administration. Mmmm...edgy...
