His drug-related statement began when Justin Gatlin - Olympic and World Champion - tested positive for a high level of testosterone. Being trained by Trevor Graham - the man linked with 8 former World Champions tested positive in the past - Michael Johnson immediately gave his verdict on the case: guilty.

And he wasn't wrong. Moreover, he asked for Trevor Graham to be suspended from all US Olympic facilities and - 2 weeks later - guess what? Graham received an indefinite ban by the USOC (US Olympic Committee).

Now,
one week after Marion Jones - another ex-Trevor Graham trainee - tested negative for her B Sample, Johnson surprises the world of athletics again. Despite the doping agencies admitting her innocence, Johnson advised Jones, in his Daily Telegraph column, to quit the sport.

"I think a lot of people believe her former husband, C J Hunter, and Victor Conte, founder of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, who have both testified to Jones using performance-enhancing drugs. And I believe all those people who want to see a clean sport celebrated the positive A sample produced by her, even though they knew it didn't make any sense at all".

"I don't believe Jones will ever be able to repair her image or get back to the type of performances that made her one of the highest profile women athletes in the world. There has been far too much damage done to her reputation due to, if nothing else, the people she has surrounded herself with the last several years", concluded Johnson.

Marion Jones failed a drug test more than a month ago, but her B Sample proved that she didn't take any performance-enhancing substances. Although she was included in the US Team for the World Championships, Jones stated that she wasn't prepared to race after almost one month of stress and lack of training.

Michael Johnson is a 5-times Olympic champion - and world champion - and has been an influential athlete throughout the last decade. Soon after his retirement from sports, American Athletics saw its image affected.
