They don’t call him the King of Pop for nothing! Michael Jackson is still making money hand over fist even though he’s been dead for 5 years: John Landis, who directed his iconic 1983 music video / short film “Thriller,” confirms that it’s getting a 3D re-release.

“Thriller” is one of the most famous music videos of all times, not just because of the brilliant makeup and VFX used in it, but also because it came at a time when artists wouldn’t even dream of coming out with 13-minute short films in lieu of music videos. Heck, few dare to do that now.

So “Thriller” is getting a re-release, with Landis telling the New York Daily News that it would have happened sooner had it not been for a legal battle between himself and the Michael Jackson Estate, which was refusing him payment.

Now that the dispute has been settled, Landis agreed to work on this new iteration of the classic video, thus helping to introduce it to a whole new segment of the audience.

“It is going to reappear in a highly polished and three-dimensional way that is very exciting on the big screen,” Landis gushes, hinting that the music video could actually be released in theaters worldwide. Whether that will happen with another MJ movie or another musical release, or on its own, he doesn’t say.

The latter variant is likely, and “Thriller” would then come to replace a couple of trailers that usually run ahead of movies.

Either way, whichever way this happens, it’s great that it does because this is the surest way of keeping Michael’s legacy alive. Until then, below is the video in full, in 2D, as it was released in 1983. Enjoy!
