“What Are the Odds?” will be his most personal, funniest film to date, Bay promises

Every director has his or her staple and, with Michael Bay, that’s explosions. In fact, the director is often mocked for sacrificing real human interaction in favor of spectacular blasts that bring nothing to the narrative but only hinder it.

A recent piece on The Onion, a well known satire website famous for its biting humor and rich imagination, takes Bay’s love of explosions as the starting point of a faux piece of news about him working on a romantic comedy.

Bay is now ironing out the final details of “What Are the Odds?,” a rom-com about two explosions who fall in love and who, against all odds, eventually find a way to be together.

“It’s really a nice little story because, on paper, these massive fireballs know they are wrong for each other, but they also have this undeniable connection they can’t ignore,” Bay is quoted as saying.

The explosions couldn’t be more different, which is the first thing that works against them in their new romance: one is a type-A helicopter blast, while the other is a diesel truck explosion, one is controlling and the other is “free-spirited.”

In other words, Bay is using known rom-com elements to show the world that there is more to his work than explosions – while using two explosions as his leads, of course.

“This movie asks common, everyday questions like, ‘How does a jet-fueled explosion find love in this day and age?’ and ‘Can a high-octane blast really settle down? Or will it always chase any cheap-thrill oil tanker explosion any chance it gets?’” Bay continues.

“The cast is reportedly rounded out by the helicopter explosion’s best friend, a quirky fertilizer plant explosion, and the truck explosion’s father played by a ‘very funny’ James Brolin,” The Onion continues.

The film will have, like most Michael Bay releases, a blown up budget of $250 million (€192.4 million).

As noted above, the piece is fictional but it’s still worth a read. Moreover, voices online are saying, how cool would it be if Bay actually made a film like this?

For those not familiar with the director’s love for all things that go boom, the video below should help you get acquainted with that.
