14 DAY TRIAL // A 47-year-old woman from Miami surprised doctors when she conceived triplets without any fertility treatments. Sharon Lewis gave birth to triplets Dylan, Denard and Denare on March 18, and she was able to take her newborn babies home on Tuesday, just in time for Mother's Day.
The woman said she was shocked to find out she was expecting triplets, first of all because she wasn't trying to get pregnant, and secondly because she already had two grown children, a 25-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son.
The mother, who works as a school cafeteria monitor, recalls the moment doctors gave her the unexpected news that she was having triplets and says it was a very emotional episode.
“She said twins at first. She said, ‘Twin A, twin B, and look like I see something else but I'm not for sure. Let me get my boss and bring her in.’ So she brought her in and she told her, she said ‘Yes it looks like another sac over there.’ Now the tears rolled because it was unexpected,” the woman confessed.
According to Yahoo News, Lewis carried the babies to 30 weeks and delivered them by Cesarian section. And although she developed preeclampsia (high blood pressure) along the way, doctors said she took great care of herself during the pregnancy.
After birth, the babies were cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit at Holtz Children's Hospital at Jackson Memorial Medical Center, and they are all well and healthy. Each one of them weighed about two pounds (1 kg) at birth and are now closer to four pounds (1.81 kg).
The mother confessed in a press conference that the triplets' birth was a big surprise for her, but “it was a wonderful surprise.”
“I felt that it was nobody but God that blessed my womb at 47. I do believe he brought me to it, he'll bring me through it,” Lewis added.
Dr. Salih Yasin, an OBGYN who specializes in high risk pregnancies at Jackson Memorial Hospital, monitored Lewis during the pregnancy and said the odds of a pregnancy like hers were one in hundreds of thousands.
“It was a miracle she got pregnant, a miracle she got there and a miracle they are normal and healthy and fine,” the doctor said.
Although it was an unexpected pregnancy for Sharon, the woman said she had a big family who would help her take good care of her new bundles of joy.
