Hackers of the Anonymous movement have launched distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks against the websites of the Mexico’s House of representatives (diputados.gob.mx) and Congress (congreso.gob.mx).

The attacks were initiated just as Senators were approving the energy bill that allowed foreign companies such as Exxon and Chevron to drill for oil. The newly approved bill is said to have numerous economic advantages for the Latin American country.

However, not everyone welcomes the Senate’s decision. Those who oppose the bill say that it allows foreign companies to profit from Mexico’s patrimony, with many believing that the approval of the law actually represents a betrayal of the people.

Hacktivists agree, which is why they’ve disrupted the two government websites. The attack lasted for around 2 hours. At the time of writing, both websites appear to be working properly.
