US-based carrier MetroPCS has just announced the world’s first commercial launch of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services. Moreover, the operator has confirmed that the new services will be available with the LG Connect 4G smartphone, which is now available for purchase for only $249 USD (200 EUR).

Customers can purchase the VoLTE-capable handset at one of the company’s Dallas/Fort Worth store locations.

The carrier is currently selling the new VoLTE-capable LG Connect 4G Android smartphone at select U.S. stores.

MetroPCS plans to add VoLTE capabilities to more 4G LTE handsets as they introduce new devices to its portfolio in the following weeks.

Furthermore, the carrier may decide to include VoLTE capabilities to smartphones, which are already available for purchase via its online store as well as brick and mortar locations.

Being the first operator globally to reach this industry first speaks volumes about our company’s innovative spirit and passion to achieve goals that we believe will have long-term benefit for our customers and for the company,” said Roger Linquist, chairman and chief executive officer of MetroPCS.

In addition, MetroPCS has confirmed that it will continue the rollout of Voice over LTE services and compatible handsets in the following weeks, so we will keep an eye out for any details that might surface.

It is also worth mentioning that calls to and from the handset will use Voice over LTE (VoLTE), regardless of the handset or network used on the other end of the line.

The initial move to LTE and this move to VoLTE allow us to achieve significant spectral efficiencies and will increase network capacity so that we can enhance the 4G LTE experience that our customers have today at a tremendous value. VoLTE also provides a foundational capability for future Rich Communication Services (RCS), which we plan to launch later this year,” concluded Linquist.
