The studio wants to create something story-based, but less linear than Metro

Developer 4A Games revealed a few details regarding its next project, designed to be more of an open-world sandbox experience, taking a break from the linearity of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light.

The information comes from an interview with Digital Foundry, during which 4A Games CTO Oles Shishkovstov said that the Ukrainian video game studio had also been working on a brand new game, in addition to remastering and re-releasing Metro Redux.

"We had the production resource free to handle Redux while the next project was in early pre-production, although now the Redux team are needed on the next project as we ramp up," he started.

"For the game we are working on now, our designers have shifted to a more sand-box-style experience - less linear but still hugely story-driven. I will not go into details, but it requires some work from programmers as well," he explained.

For the time being, there is no more information regarding the mysterious title. The Metro series is the only one that the developer has worked on, and it might attempt to expand on the rich post-apocalyptic universe created by Russian writer Dmitry Glukhovsky. At the same time, the studio might also be attempting to create its own, brand new IP.

"Also, we are improving graphics in very different aspects, like recently we did a physically-based global ambient occlusion (instead of local, like SSAO). I will not talk about PBR (physically-based rendering) here, because here we are at the stage when artists are still adapting their mentality to it," Shishkovstov continued.

"Actually for the next unannounced project, the designers want more and more of everything (as usual), and quite possibly we will target 30fps," he revealed, hinting that 4A Games's next project might target 30fps, in spite of the fact that the studio successfully achieved 60fps for Metro Redux on all platforms.

Metro Redux is an effort meant to improve the two games all across the board (most notably the first one), bundling together Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light in full HD, at 1080p and 60 frames per second, with a ton of gameplay improvements and streamlined systems.

The revised first-person shooter is currently digitally available for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and launches at retail on August 29, this Friday.

The company has just released Metro Redux's launch trailer today, so have a look below and see the enhanced visuals and other features added to the original experience.
