Konami might have revealed the release date of the PC edition of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, with rumors pointing to the game's Steam launch taking place on December 18.

The company did not make any official statements on the subject, so for the time being take this with a grain of salt, but during its game conference in Moscow last week, the release date transpired somehow.

The news was reported by multiple Russian sources, pointing to December 18 as the Steam release date for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the prologue of the much larger Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Ground Zeroes sets the stage for The Phantom Pain

Ground Zeroes is the standalone prologue of MGSV: The Phantom Pain, following Big Boss as he infiltrates an American site in Cuba, attempting the rescue of two agents. The standalone release was criticized for being very short, but director Hideo Kojima said that the team wanted to give players an early taste of what would be coming.

The release was met with praise from both critics and gamers, and the news that Konami would be releasing both games for PC was received with excitement by gamers all across the world.

The PC version will hopefully not turn out to be a lazy port of the console edition, and we'll get to put the proprietary Fox Engine that Kojima Productions is using to power the game to the test.

Between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions, the PS4 one was reported to be the superior one, but hopefully the developer will be able to get the Xbox One version of MGSV: The Phantom Pain up to par before the main game's release in 2015.

More complex than any other MGS game

The game is expected to come out sometime during next year's first quarter, and director Kojima hinted at the fact that it might be the last title in the series to feature the current cast of characters.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is set to offer gamers a complex narrative, just like Kojima's previous productions did, and to deliver an interesting gameplay experience, revolving mostly around the patented stealth-based infiltration mechanics that the franchise is famous for.

The game will also deliver a ton of innovations, in addition to a stunning level of graphical fidelity. Players will be able to build their Mother Base and outfit it with defenses and staff recruited while playing the missions. They will also be able to keep an eye on their bases using their smartphones, through a dedicated companion app.

The Phantom Pain will also offer gamers the chance to break from the linear path of former installments in the series, with the developers enabling the use of different sneaking and traversal options, as well as the possibility of choosing in what order various story events take place.
