An elaborate hoax by Animal Planet producers has left those believing in the mythical mermaids disappointed and lashing out on Twitter.

As previously reported, the “Mermaids: The New Evidence” show registered record ratings of 3.6 million viewers.

Creator Charlie Foley admitted to intentionally leaving the audience guessing in a bid to enrich their viewing experience. The flick was produced in the style of a documentary.

However, many fans disagree with his marketing ploy, feeling duped and made to waste their time, as News Max writes.

“Dreams have been shattered,” one Twitter user says, while others allege a conspiracy is at play.

“So I'm pretty sure that government didn't want people to know about mermaids so they covered it up by calling it a ‘hoax’ on the news,” another user says.
