Menopausal women have been complaining about having a foggy brain for years, yet it took a while for researchers to investigate the matter at hand and confirm that memory loss, mood swings and hot flashes are all symptoms associated with menopause.

The specialists now saying that the so-called menopause foggy brain is a real phenomenon and not just a myth reached this conclusion after asking a total of 68 female volunteers to complete a series of memory tests.

The women who took part in this researcher were all menopausal and experienced hot flashes on a fairly regular basis. Their age ranged from 44 to 62.

As The Inquisitr explains, some of the them only had to face mild hot flashes, while others admitted to having rather intense ones.

Since those who had the most severe hot flashes were also the ones who displayed noteworthy memory problems, the researchers agreed that there had to be a connection between those two symptoms.

Interestingly enough, it appears that the women most affected by mood swings also showed clear signs of having a foggy brain.

In other words, the negative emotions experienced by menopausal women usually go hand in hand with memory loss.

The same source informs us that, as far as the researchers can tell, all these symptoms (i.e. hot flashes, mood swings and memory loss) are caused by fluctuating hormone levels.

Because of this, the specialists maintain that the cognition changes are not permanent and are bound to disappear once menopause ends.

Furthermore, they say that the foggy brain phenomenon is at its peak during the first year of menopause.

“The good news for women is that there’s proof that their perception about their performance is real,” Dr. Margery Gass commented on the findings of this research.

“Women should become proactive, make notes and lists, and make use of the little tricks that help us perform better,” said specialist recommended.
