Average prices for 2 GB and 4 GB modules could slide below current levels

During the first half of November, prices of the most commonly bought memory modules didn't really go down or even up, but this could change in December.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but the winter holidays could allow 2 GB and 4GB modules to sell for less than $17.75 / €13.10 and $32 / €23.16, respectively.

If it happens, though, it won't be due to any goodwill, so to speak, on the part of chip makers or module producers.

SK Hynix, for one, intends to stick to its fixed price rates, especially since it's still recovering from that fire that hit its China fab in September.

Still, this is a sort of off-season for the PC and other DRAM end markets, regardless of Christmas. That is why prices could go down, because demand could dip. A paradox, to be sure, but one that will be welcomed by those who do buy RAM during this period.
