Melissa McCarthy, Penelope Cruz, Reese Witherspoon, and Shailene Woodley are the four ladies gracing the November issue of Elle’s Women in Hollywood special, but only Melissa’s cover has caused a ruckus online. She never imagined that this would happen.

For the shoot, the comedienne was styled with huge (bed) hair and a super trendy fall coat, both of which were seen by some as desperate attempts at hiding her figure, which is larger than the norm in showbiz.

Elle Magazine has already issued a statement to say they have nothing to apologize for because it was Melissa who picked to wear the coat – and Melissa is now confirming it for E! News.

“What I found so bizarre is I picked the coat. I grabbed the coat. I covered up. I had a great black dress on but I thought, it comes out in November. I was so sick of summer,” the actress reveals.

The coat wasn’t some last moment attempt at hiding her body but a statement, because she personally found it absolutely gorgeous, an item that deserved to be on the cover of a fashion magazine.

“I live in Southern California. I was like, ‘Give me a big coat to wear. Give the girl some cashmere!’ I picked the coat. They were like, ‘The dress is really great,’ but I was like, ‘Yeah, but look at this.’ I was just shocked I didn't steal it,” Melissa continues.

On second thought, she adds, “Now I think I really should have the coat. I'm petitioning for that coat. Give me that coat. I earned it, damn it!”

Since she went mainstream thanks to her hilarious turn in “Bridesmaids,” Melissa went on the record several times on the need for Hollywood to embrace more than just one body type. She also said that she didn’t plan to lose weight even if that meant she’d be more in demand so, really, it doesn’t seem likely that she’d go along with being told to cover up for a magazine cover, even if that mag is Elle.
