Report says Mel Gibson was trying to get himself killed that day in 2006 when he was arrested for DUI

Mel Gibson’s DUI arrest in 2006, which ended with him hurling anti-Semitic insults at a female police officer, was not a reflection of his true character but rather his way of inviting “death by cop,” it has emerged.

As fans must know, back in 2006, the actor was pulled over by police on suspicion of getting behind the wheel intoxicated – which turned out to be the case.

As a female police officer was trying to get him into the car, after she concluded he had been, indeed, drinking, he lashed out at her, insulting her and calling her names.

It was the incident that got him pegged with the anti-Semitic label – but the latest issue of Vanity Fair has it from industry people that this is actually the last thing Mel is, PageSix writes.

Gibson had been drinking, that much is true, the magazine writes. When he called police officers names and told them that “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” he was actually trying to get himself killed.

In other words, he was trying to provoke the police officers into drawing the gun on him and shooting him – because his wife Robyn had just left him.

“Mel Gibson sought ‘death by cop’ after his wife, Robyn, left him while he was filming “Apocalypto” in 2006, according to Vanity Fair. Peter Biskind writes in the Hollywood issue that Gibson had started drinking again on location and returned home to LA to find Robyn had moved out with the kids,” PageSix writes.

“He felt that he had just absolutely failed as a human being. Mel was trying to invite death by cop. I don’t think this was being anti-Semitic. I think he was trying to rile that guy into pulling out a gun and shooting him,” an unnamed friend tells VF.

Apparently, after he was done drinking at Moonshadows in Malibu, Gibson sat up from his table and said goodbye to everyone there that night, personally going by each table to shake hands with people.

“I believe what was going on that night was a farewell,” says the same unnamed friend.

This would come to confirm what Danny Glover, Gibson’s co-star in all the “Lethal Weapon” movies, said shortly after the DUI arrest, as well as what other friends of the actor have been saying since then: he’s not an anti-Semite.
