Robert Rodriguez is now casting for “Machete Kills,” the sequel to the feature film “Machete,” starring none other than Danny Trejo and, according to the latest reports, Mel Gibson is in the running for a part.

That the director had Gibson's name on a wishlist for future collaborations is already well known. It would seem that, with a bit of luck and negotiations skills, he's about to get his wish done.

The actor is officially in talks for a part in the sequel, SlashFilm reports.

“Gibson was recently revealed as a wishlist actor for Rodriguez, who is assembling the cast for an action film that sees Machete working for the US Government. Now the actor is in real talks for the film, which will shoot later this year,” the movie-oriented publication says.

For the time being, details on the part remain well under wraps, but the same media outlet believes that Gibson could either play an arms dealer or some kind of government suit, based on the short synopsis available online.

“The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man,” the synopsis says.

“Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy,” adds the same.

The idea for the Machete character was first used in a faux trailer that was featured in “Grindhouse.” When it proved a hit with audiences, Rodriguez decided to come out with a real feature film.

Said and done: “Machete” came out in 2010, featured a slew of famous faces, was a hit with audiences and, just as important, ranked very high with critics as well.

Last time we heard anything of the possibility of a sequel was in December 2010, when Trejo himself was dropping hints left and right about how he knew of two sequels in the making – and even that the scripts for them were done already.

Robert Rodriguez will direct the upcoming “Machete Kills,” but he's also considering the possibility of bringing another director on board as well, if the shooting schedule coincides with that for “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.”
