Just in case there are still people who doubt that our planet's seas and oceans are home to quite a lot of odd-looking creatures, here is a piece of news bound to give these folks something to think about the next time they go swimming.

Thus, media reports say that a rare megamouth shark has recently been caught in Japanese waters. If you have no idea what a megamouth shark is, rest assured, it really is not your fault.

According to wildlife researchers, this species was officially recognized only about three decades ago, and its representatives take pride in keeping a low profile.

As noticeable in the picture above, these sharks have a really big head and an equally impressive mouth. When compared to the rest of the animals' body, the head and the mouth are seriously out of proportion.

Japan Daily Press informs that the recently found megamouth shark specimen has been caught at a depth of about 2,600 feet (about 792 meters) and measured about 13 feet (roughly 4 meters) in length.

The animal's weight amounted to an impressive 1,500 pounds (approximately 680 kilograms), the same source details. However, specialists say that these animals can grow to be even bigger.

The megamouth shark caught in Japanese waters has been autopsied earlier this week, and some 1,500 people have witnessed the procedure. Its remains are now on display at a local museum.
