Mighty No. 9 is the name of Keiji Inafune's new project on Kickstarter. The ex-head of production from Capcom and co-designer of the popular Mega Man character recently announced plans to launch a classic Japanese side-scrolling action game.

Inafune's past experience with one of his own projects that was canceled a few years ago led him to believe that the only viable solution for a successful project is Kickstarter.

According to Inafune, Mighty No. 9 is the spiritual successors of Mega Man and will be developed by “an all-star team of veteran Mega Man devs.”

Obviously, those who pledge to the projects will be involved in some of the projects decisions, such as gameplay, story and design.

Even though most of the game's aspects like art, level design, music and programming is being handled by a team of veteran Japanese game creators that have extensive experience in this specific game genre, and with Mega Man in particular, all backers will have access to the latest info and work progress through blogs, podcasts, videos and concept art.

The team of development already confirmed Mighty No. 9 is being created for the PC with gamepad support, but other platforms, including home consoles, Mac and Linux are on the table if the necessary Kickstarter stretch goals will be achieved by the end of the campaign.

Speaking of which, Mighty No. 9 project was launched yesterday and will be funded if at least $900,000 (€680.000) is pledged by October 1.

Although the amount might seem high at first glance, it looks like Mega Man has a huge fan pool willing to finance this project with their own money. It only took 24 hours for developers to raise almost 50% of the amount required for the project to be successfully funded.

Fans of the genre and those who wish to support the making of Mega Man's spiritual successor can head over to Kickstarter for more details on the Mighty No. 9 project.
