Capcom is announcing that it is bringing the Mega Man series
back to life, with a new game planned for release as soon as fall. The title is set to mark a return to the roots of what made Mega Man a game loved by millions of fans.
Mega Man 9 will be developed by IntiCreates and the Wiimote will be used as the player would use a classic NES game pad. It seems that little or even no gestures will be in the game, with the creators going for a more classical feel in the control department. Oh, and there are apparently plans for a second player to join in co-op play, maybe controlling Proto Man.
Mega Man 9 will not continue the graphical style of the PlayStation based Mega Man 8 and Mega Man 7. There's a return to the basics in the new game, with Keiji Inafune saying that being published through WiiWare is one of the reasons for a more 8 bit-like graphics aspect.
The story is not epic in scale, say like that of Mass Effect, the developers decided that simplicity is the best approach for such a classic title. There are robots causing mayhem and pain and, of course, long time antagonist Doctor Wily passes the blame to Doctor Light. Mega Man is the only person that can clear the name of the Doctor, all while fighting a variety of robots like Magma Man, Galaxy Man, Jewel Man, Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Plug Man, Tornado Man and Splash Woman. Political correctness seems to be overtaking even the usually male robot dominated Mega Man franchise.
It's not clear for what platforms the game will be released. The
WiiWare version is confirmed by the developers, but there were initially reports that the
Xbox Live and the
PlayStation Network would also be receiving the game.
