Information revealing that Samsung was working on a budget, affordable smartphone, known in the rumor mill as the Galaxy J1, has recently surfaced.

The handset has yet to be officially announced by the parent company, but while we wait on that Sam Mobile gives us a sneak peek into what to expect from the handset.

As you can see for yourself in the gallery, the Samsung Galaxy J1 follows the design characteristics of older models announced by the company, but that’s hardly a shocker.

Samsung to use a 64-bit chip in its latest low-end handset

But what seems to be the most interesting aspect about the Galaxy J1 is that is going to be powered by a 64-bit processor. Sammy uses a quad-core Marvell PXA1908 chip clocked at 1.2GHz for the purpose of juicing up the machine, fitted with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage (it’s expandable).

Apart from that, the handset boasts a 4.3-inch display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution and dons two cameras (5MP on the back and 2MP up in front).

The Galaxy J1 relies on a pretty average 1850 mAh battery, but luckily enough Samsung is offering a bunch of features one would expect to find on higher-end Galaxy devices, like Ultra Power Saving mode.

Samsung will offer the Galaxy J1 in LTE and non-LTE flavors and in single SIM and dual SIM variations. There’s no information related to pricing and we’ll probably have to wait until Sammy launches the device to know what it is.

Budget phones to get better and better?

It appears more and more device manufacturers are showing an interest towards building affordable devices with decent specs.

For example, yesterday we told you about Huawei’s upcoming handset, the G628 which will be powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6752 chip and will sell for around $160 / €135.

The handset will launch first in China, but for the time being it is unknown whether the wallet-friendly gizmo will go on sale internationally.
