Xbox2, Xbox 360, you may call it anyway you like, but for Microsoft the new gaming console is more than that.
Aside from Bill Gates's optimistic statements, who sees in the new Xbox a sure candidate for the number 1 position in the world of consoles, the marketing campaign proposed by Microsoft to promote the technological wonder has little to do with games.
Xbox is a more ambitious project, the purpose of the multimedia features being the promoting of the new console as an entertainment hub.
Those who buy Xbox will play, have access to HDTV, music and wireless connections.
With Xbox, Microsoft has won the second place on the market, but at the cost of great sacrifices. It is estimated that since 2001 and until now, Microsoft has lost money each year and the new Xbox2 will have to recover the invested sums, and also to generate profit.
The situation from 2005 is nothing like the one from 2001. In the last four years, over 200 titles for the Xbox have been released and the community of fans is now composed of millions of enthusiasts.
Microsoft has sold 20 million consoles and only 2 million copies of the Windows Media XP Center, and so, Xbox will surely achieve what the operating system has failed. With a price tag of approximately 300 dollars, Xbox2 has the potential of not only becoming the main source of entertainment, but also of replacing the PCs for those who use the computers only for entertainment.
Moreover, until PS3 and other consoles there is still a long way, and even if Xbox is in stores in November, Microsoft still has almost one year ahead of Sony.
