Reddy is a development tool as well as an entertainment robot

The robotmania is back with new items. The Canada base robotics company Robo Motio has recently developed a new humanoid robot designed to express emotions as it interacts with people.

If Kensey used to frown when he heard the word "president", this one would probably be less sarcastic, since it is Canadian.

I have to admit I have expected a better looking robot. No offence, Reddy, but Kensey is still the first on my list, even if he is not as smart as you!

The Robot was called Reddy, probably because he is wearing a hard steel red casing, not very fashionable these days. It comes equipped with 9 servos in its face, which allow the robot to express a wide range of emotions like joy, anger, sadness, surprise and disgust.

The built-in nine quiet servos control parts of the face, such as lips, eyes pitch and yaw and eyebrows though eight quiet and powerful digital servos control neck pitch and yaw, shoulders and elbows.

The robot is only a torso, which features rather small dimensions of 1.0 x 0.4 x 0.3 m, created to be used in various research purposes, entertainment or marketing applications.

According to RoboMotio, the hardware and architecture on Reddy are highly modular allowing specific configuration, while the head and the arms can be sold individually. It seems that little red Reddy is going to be used mostly for its "organs". Sounds creepy!

The robot weighs 14 kg, just like a 4-year-old kid. There are a lot of other options that can be installed on the robot such as: microphone array, eye camera, laptops rack or CAN driver.

The basic version of Reddy includes the head, neck, torso and arms for a total of 17 degrees of freedom. It also comes with a main board with power system, servos controller (up to 20), adjustable analog input and 4 bumpers switch.

I believe the RoboMotio did wrong when choosing not to give him legs or any other means of movement. But those willing to take the risk can attach him to "many standard or non-standard mobile robot bases."

The funny thing is that Reddy is accused of being a "communist Robot". Poor Reddy!
