Meet Dede, The Tree Man

He may have inspired the Treebeard from "Lord of the Rings". But how did he get in this situation?

First, it's about the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common human virus, is known especially as a leading cause of warts and cancer. It is also the main cause of cervical cancer (in uterus) (95 % of the cases). Due to oral sex, HPV can cause larynx, esophagus and oropharyngeal cancer (affecting the throat, tonsils and back of the tongue), at a rate which is higher than heavy smoking or alcoholism. This virus can also provoke periungual skin, vulva, vagina, penis, perianal and anus cancer and it is also suspected to cause breast
cancer.

Less powerful strains cause only warts. Benign warts. Is it so? In combination with a weak immune system, this leads to the whole body being covered with tree-like growths. This is the unique case of Dede, 35, an Indonesian fisherman. The warty "roots" started developing themselves out of his arms and feet after he accidentally cut his knee when he was just 15. The growths spread chaotically over his body, leaving him incapacitated, unable to do everyday household tasks. And they are heavy!

They grow at a fast rhythm of 5 mm per month and when Dede tried to cut them off, they grew back even faster!
Jobless and abandoned by his wife, Dede had to raise by himself his two children in poverty. He joined a local "freak show" to earn a living, being presented in front of the paying audience alongside other cases of odd conditions, being the victim of abuse and ridicule in his own village, south of Jakarta.

Indonesian doctors could not cope with his case, but Dede's relief could come from Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland. Based on blood tests, he found that Dede's condition was caused by HPV.

Dede was found to possess two rare genetic mutations that rendered inactive CD4 immune white blood cells involved in stopping the warts' growth. The virus could thus infect the skin tissues, triggering the development of the massive root-like growths, called "cutaneous horns". The low levels of CD4 cells in Dede's blood pointed initially towards HIV infection.

Amazingly, with all his impaired immune system, Dede and his kids have enjoyed good health.

"The likelihood of having his deficiency is less than one in a million," Gaspari told the Telegraph.co.uk.

Gaspari believes that synthetic Vitamin A could stop the development of Dede's formations, as it works in severe HPV infections.

In 3-6 months, Dede could use his hand, even if it will still not look like a normal one. The most therapy-resistant warts could be removed through freezing off and surgery.

"I've never seen anything like this in my entire career." said Gaspari.

Discovery Channel presented the documentary about Dede's case "Half Man Half Tree", as part of the "My Shocking Story" series, at 9pm, on November 15th.

I don't know what it is about this man but when I saw him and heard him on the TV I wanted to help him. I really hope that the Discovery Channel will do updates on Dede. I would like to see him when he is cured and back to some kind of normal with his life back.

Is there a location to send donations for Dede?

Comment #5 by: K on 28 May 2008, 14:57 UTC reply to this comment

I just watched the documentry on dede. Makes me feel silly when I
complain about the odd minor skin blemish I occasionly get. I hope he gets better and all the best for his friends with other skin conditions too. Lets hope you will not have to perform at the freak shows much longer. I cringed at what they were making him do.

There are times such as these that cases as of Dedes should be taken to the highest of concerns.

With the help and support of doctors and the public (donations towards if not curing but managing dede's defeciency) we are not only merely giving a man a chance to live a normal life, but we are one step closer to that of what is called, 'the cure.'

I recall recently a single mother of 2 struggeling to pay her morgage on the radio show 101.9 FM. Following the talk about her struggle, callers donated close to five thousand dollars.

I highly recommend a radio show start a donation call time for Dede.
Come on Australia show the rest of the world what we're made of!

i would like to say to Dede there is a God in heaven who said in the bible Psalms 103 vs 1 A Psalm of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

and that God is still the same as Heb 13 vs 8 states "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever"

.God gan heal your disease and that is the only solution to your problem

Really? God is all he needs to cure this imense mutation of hpv? You've obviously lost your god-damned brain. Where was the o lord when he was born with genetic mutations in the first place? oor was Jesus just supposed to tell dede when he was 15 "oh hey- dont cut yourself on that- It will give you HPV" >_< Im sure the man has done a lot of praying in his day for relief from his pain and agony. Thank the lord for scientists, that's about it.

I thought Dede was a construction worker, not a fisherman.
Also, this man is amazing. His livlihood was taken from him, along with his dignity. And I am so grad he is getting help, this brave man deserves it.

i feel very sorry for dede. his condition is not even his fault. it's very sad. i believe that the government should get together to help find a cure for dede.
if we can find a cure for dede we can find a cure for possibly anything.

Every single pharmaceutical company should be lined up BEGGING to donate the chemo drugs for this man. Pharm cos are one of the biggest thieves and this would help them prove to the world that their drug is capable of curing this man. It would be the CHEAPEST form of self advertising. This is a NO BRAINER folks. Greed is a far uglier word than socialism.

I am humbled by what Dede is going through and his strong will to live and to survive despites all the injustices he faces in every day life. I salute you Dede, for showing us how vain we are about our appearances.

I really hope that scientists can find a cure. and i agree with comment #1, Irma, and even if the scientists don't believe that God is enough of an inspiration, the fame that they would get for finding the cure would be imminence .
