Only a couple of months after the merger of Maemo and Moblin into a new operating system, MeeGo, the first release of the new platform is available. The release of MeeGo v1.0 is set to offer developers a core foundation for the building of applications that will target mainly netbooks, though MeeGo v1.0 core software platform for the Nokia N900 has been made available too. However, the MeeGo Handset user experience is expected to be moving to the open as soon as the coming month.

According to the development team, the plan is to have new releases delivered into the wild on a six month basis. The next flavor, MeeGo v1.1, is expected to hit the web in October, featuring support for touchscreen-based devices, including handsets, tablets, or in-vehicle infotainment systems. The development tree for MeeGo v1.1 is open, and components will be released to it in time.

Today's release includes the MeeGo API, such as Qt 4.6, as well as the MeeGo SDK to offer an integrated app development environment, and various other OS tools. While this release of the MeeGo SDK is aimed mainly at netbooks, the next release will come with support for handsets and touchscreen devices, and should land in June.

The features list of MeeGo v1.0 Core Software Platform includes: - Kernel based on 2.6.33 - DeviceKit and udev for interacting with hardware devices - Modern 2D / 3D graphics stack including Kernel Mode Setting, non-root X - Voice and data connectivity with Connman connection manager, Ofono telephony stack and BlueZ Bluetooth - Qt 4.6 - Universal Plug and Play (gUPnP) - Media frameworks - Next generation file system BTRFS, as the default file system.

As for the MeeGo user experience, it comes with access to synchronized calendar, tasks, appointments, recently used files and social networking updates on the homescreen, integrated Google Chrome (the MeeGo Handset user experience comes with the Fennec Mozilla Browser), email, calendar and media player applications, performance and power optimizations, and more.
